Warts have invaded your body. You’ve tried soaking them until your skin is wrinkled, filing them off, and digging them out. Not only do you still have them, they are spreading. Someone suggested using essential oils for warts, but you don’t know the first thing about doing so. Your pharmacy has a selection of oils in their alternative health section, but there isn’t any information as to which ones are good for warts or how to use them. Relax. We’ve collected descriptions of which oils are effective and how to safely use them to remove your warts.

Choosing Essential Oils for Warts

Many essential oils have properties that will help to kill viruses. That makes them effective for warts because the only way to truly eliminate warts is to kill the underlying virus that causes them. Not every essential oil works for every individual, and not every oil helps to kill warts.

How to choose essential oil for wart removalEach essential oil carries the name of the plant or natural material from which it was made. For example, rose oil is made from roses. There are three questions that need to be answered so you can choose an oil that will be helpful to you.

They are:

  • Is it a high-quality oil.
  • Is it effective for warts.
  • How do you use it on warts.

The remainder of this article is devoted to answering these questions in depth for you.

How Do People Get Warts
Warts are a viral infection that can’t be cured by antibiotics. The virus is transmitted via skin-to-skin contact. That means you can become infected by touching someone else’s wart, or getting more warts if you touch or pick at your own warts. If your immune system is strong, it will repel or suppress the virus. For this reason, children often have more warts than adults because their immune systems usually aren’t fully developed. They also tend to have more broken skin, such as scratches or abrasions that make infection easy.

How Are Quality Essential Oils Made?

Oil distillationAlthough we often aren’t aware of it, all plants contain oils. It’s the source of their fragrances. Humans use two processes to extract oil from plants: distillation and cold pressing. Distillation has been in use for thousands of years, however, the process has been improved in modern times. Cold pressing in ancient times was done by hand. Now it’s usually done in centrifuges. Because essential oils have been used by people for so long, their safety and how to use them has been established.

The first thing you want to determine is that the product you’re purchasing is made from a plant. Despite what any labeling says, synthetic oils are not effective. Avoid them. Look for a product that 100% pure organic essential oil. Most will have the common name of the plant as well as the Latin name, so that you know exactly what you’re getting.

The Eight Best Essential Oils

Not all essential oils have antiviral properties.

Here’s a list of oils that are known to help get rid of warts:

  • Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus / Cymbopogon flexuosus).
  • Clove (Syzygium aromaticum).
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia).
  • Cajeput (Melaleuca leucadendra).
  • Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus).
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita).
  • Thyme (Thymus vulgaris / Thymus zygis).
  • Frankincense (Boswellia carterii).

Many of these oils have antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties in addition to their antiviral properties.

Blend lavender oil with other oils to avoid dry skin.
  1. Lemongrass oil has very strong antiviral action. It works to kill viruses when you’re first exposed and after you’re infected.
  2. Clove oil is another strong antiviral oil. Individuals like to use it on their feet when they have painful plantar warts because it’s also an anesthetic.
  3. Tea tree oil has strong antiviral properties. Despite the name, it isn’t a member of the tea family. Most of it is harvested from trees in Australia.
  4. Cajeput oil is a member of the tea tree family. It’s effective in killing the virus that causes warts.
  5. Eucalyptus oil isn’t as strong as the others, but it’s usually easier to obtain, and often less expensive, than stronger oils. It will kill your warts but will take longer than the others do.
  6. Peppermint oil is usually inexpensive and easy to obtain. It’s most effective in the very early stages of a viral infection. It will help you the most if you apply it to your hands after you’ve touched a wart, before the virus has a chance to infect your skin.
  7. Thyme essential oil is especially good for viruses that live in your skin, such as the ones that cause warts.
  8. Frankincense is the gentlest oil. It’s best for individuals with sensitive skin or children. It works slower than the others, but it can be used on genital warts.

Choosing the oil that’s best for you is a process of trying one that’s strong enough to work for you without irritating your skin. It’s important to do a skin patch in an inconspicuous place before applying even the gentlest oils to your wart. Because the oils are made from plants, there’s always the possibility of having an allergic reaction.

There could be a variance due to the kind of warts you have. Each kind of wart is caused by a slightly different virus, and an oil that works for you on one wart might not work on another wart in a different location. How Do I Use Essential Oils on My Warts?

Grapeseed, Jojoba and Coconut oilsThe process is generally to start with a mild oil from the above list. If you don’t notice an improvement with it, go to the next one up the list. It takes approximately two to four weeks for an essential oil to eliminate a wart. The time, however, depends on the kind of wart you have, if you have more than one wart, and your general health. Most essential oils are too strong to apply to your skin undiluted. Oils are diluted with other oils, called carrier oils.

The common carrier oils are:

  • Almond oil,
  • Emu oil,
  • Coconut oil,
  • Grapeseed oil,
  • Jojoba oil,
  • Olive oil.

It’s important when choosing a carrier oil to make sure it’s pure and organic. A carrier oil that is highly refined or has lots of additives is not good for your skin. The basic proportion is three drops of essential oil to one tablespoon of carrier oil. If this mixture doesn’t irritate your skin after you’ve used it for a couple of days, you can increase the essential oil by one drop at a time. Mix the oils in a glass bottle and keep it tightly closed between applications.

Olive essential oilEven diluted, you want to apply the oil only to the wart itself. You can do that with an eye dropper or a cotton swab. Unless your skin becomes irritated, treat your warts up to four times a day with the essential oil. Essential oils for warts are usually more effective if you can apply small amounts several times a day rather than a large amount once a day. Keep using the oil for a week after your wart disappears to help ensure that it is completely gone.

Essential oil for kidsUsing an essential oil without diluting it is called “neat.” You can try that with the milder oils, but avoid applying oils from the top half of the list neat. Never use oils neat on children or if you have sensitive skin.

You can also customize an essential oil blend that best meets your needs. A useful combination for many individuals is equal drops of tea tree and eucalyptus oils in a favorite carrier oil.

Essential oils can be added to moisturizers and lotions.
